Tawau woman proud of her firefighter son
Tawau: A 55-year-old mother here is proud of her firefighter son who lost his life in the line of duty together with five others, in Selangor, on Wednesday. "I'm proud of Mazlan. He is my hero and the Fire and Rescue Department in the country," said Asmah Abdalis when met at her aunt's house in Kg Batu Tinagat, here, Thursday.

She said although at first she couldn't believe that the incident happened to Mazlan Omarbaki, 25, she accepted the passing of her fourth of six siblings and hoped he would be placed among believers in heaven.

"I came to know it at 10pm when my sister in Semporna said she saw my son in the news. I said I did not believe it because I had just spoken to Mazlan.

"I immediately contacted my daughter based at the Jerantut Police Headquarters and asked her to contact the Puchong Fire Station, which confirmed that Mazlan was among the victims," she said.

She said the last she spoke to him was at about 7am on Tuesday before he left for work. "I asked him how he was and Mazlan told me to stay healthy."

She said Mazlan, who was fondly called Lan among family members, was a responsible son, independent and had always been concerned about the family.

"He had plans for the family. He even bought a house in Bandar Sri Indah to facilitate us here. He also did repairs on our house in Semporna. Every year he applied to be transferred to Sabah to take care of me," said the single mother.

She said since her husband's death in 2012, Mazlan took up the role as the family head because he was the eldest son and had always advised his siblings and shared his work experience every time he came home for holidays.

"He was a good son, he listened to advice and was always cheerful… he once asked me to find him a wife once he gets stable in life," she recalled.

Asmah said although it was painful to lose a child in such manner, she would not stop her other children who wish to pursue a career in the Fire and Rescue Department.

Asmah is mother to six children, comprising four daughters and two sons, aged between 33 and 16. Among them is Insp. Nuriah, 31, who works as a Commercial Crime Investigating Officer based in Jerantut Police Headquarters. Mazlan was a member of the Fire and Rescue Dive Rescue Team who was killed together with five other firefighters during a rescue mission in search of a teenager who was reported to have slipped and fell while fishing at a mine at about 9.15pm on Wednesday. - Lagatah Toyos
