Silat boss happy over 5 golds

Kota Kinabalu: Long time President of Sabah Silat Association Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim was over the moon with the success of his athletes in the just concluded 19th Sukma Games in Ipoh, Perak.The team won a total of five gold, two silver and three bronze medals to finish second overall behind Pahang who had six golds, one silver and seven bronzes."As President of the State body for more than ten years, this is the most satisfying Sukma outing for me, as the final results was beyond our expectation with the five gold, two silver and three bronze medals that our athletes managed to win.ADVERTISEMENT "This is the highest achievement since Sabah took part in the biennial Games and I am very happy for the team," he said on Sunday night here, upon the team's return from Kuala Lumpur."The success is all due to hard work and a proper training programme. We carried out our training not just here in Sabah but also in the Peninsula, in states like Pahang and Perak."We also engaged experts from the Peninsula to play the role as special coaches. However, credit must also be given to our local coaches like Emy Latip who had represented Malaysia and won the gold in the World Championship, for a job well done."I am very glad Silat contributed the most gold for Sabah contingent in this meet, and in addition to that, we were ranked second in Malaysia and one of our exponents Andi Azura Muluk also won the Best Promising Award which was also the first for us.ADVERTISEMENT "This success was not just by the athletes themselves but it was a team effort with all involved, and I must thank the Youth and Sports Ministry and MSN for their overwhelming support," he said.He added that they will try their very best to repeat their success in the next Sukma in two year's time.

"We will definitely try to aim for the same achievement but with most players not eligible for the next Sukma, we have to get new athletes. We will hold selections from time to time and I urge all district associations to hold competitions to unearth new talents."Meanwhile, the five who won gold were Amiruddin Adzmi (Men's Class H), Nursyazeera Hidayah Idris (Women's Class B), Andi Azura Muluk (Women's Class D), Nurul Hazifah Jederion (Class F) and Nuratikah Mustafah (Women's Singles) with the silver from Yvonne Yap (Women's Class C), Rozinah Janil and Joysherlyn Junih (Women's Doubles) while the bronze came from Andi Ahmad Mohd Ali (Men's Class I), Amran Maklin (Men's Class J) and Nor Farah Mazlan (Women's Class A). - GL Oh
