'Strengthen unity once shaken by GE14 campaign'

Kuching: All Malaysians should manifest their love for the country in any possible way, especially by staying united, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.He said any misunderstanding should be set aside in order to maintain racial unity which had existed in the country for so long, but was somehow "shaken" by the racial-based campaigns mounted by political parties contesting in the 14th general election.

In view of the Malaysia Day celebration this Sunday, he said the meaning of the sacred date of Sept 16 should be more appreciated and truly observed by not only the people in Sabah and Sarawak, but all Malaysians to commemorate the day the Malaysia was formed.

The chief minister also lauded the approach taken by the Malaysian Information Department in organising various public exhibitions and distribution of nationalism-related reading materials in the forms of booklets and pamphlets to enable the public to learn more about the country.

"This kind of public-engagement effort is important to enhance the spirit of patriotism, the love for the country and racial unity among the people," he said at the launch of "MyMerdeka Sayangi Malaysiaku" programme here, Friday.

The MyMerdeka Sayangi Malaysiaku programme this year had been held in five Mydin Hypermarkets across the country, with the first at Mydin Bukit Mertajam, Penang; Mydin USJ Subang Jaya, Selangor; Mydin Meru Raya, Ipoh, Perak; Mydin Mutiara Rini Skudai, Johor; and the last at Mydin Petra Jaya, Sarawak, Friday.

The programme organised by the Information Department and Mydin Mohamad Holdings Bhd, which entered its third year this year, is aimed at enhancing public awareness about government's aspiration to create a new Malaysia in which the people are united and practicing racial tolerance. – Bernama
