Full maternity service now at Tuaran hosp: DG
Tuaran: The district hospital is set to serve the people here and the adjacent districts better as it can now provide full maternity service, said Health deputy director-general Datuk Dr Azman Abu Bakar.Azman said previously the hospital only provided an alternative maternity service centre for mothers categorised as low risk.

"High-risk mothers would be sent to a referral hospital to deliver their babies," he said during the celebration of babies born during the National Month, here, Thursday. "But now, Tuaran Hospital is able to provide full maternity service, including surgery for cases with risks.

"The services are handled by medical officers who were trained by obstetrics and gynaecology consultants."

He added, even though the full maternity service has been provided in the hospital, many mothers have yet to know about it.

"As such, I hope mothers will come to Tuaran Hospital to get maternity and antenatal services. "I was made to understand that the maternity service here is on par with the services provided by private hospitals," he said.

The services in the hospital, he said, are comfortable where a mother will be placed in a single room during delivery.

"Their privacy is protected and husbands, too, can accompany their wives during delivery under certain conditions to enhance the quality and reputation of the delivery room service." Azman was also confident that the hospital will put emphasis on ensuring the needs of patients are attended to, in line with its corporate culture of encouraging professionalism and team spirit.

"I am sure the health personnel in the hospital, especially the nurses, will provide guidance and information to mothers in the effort of retaining the success of the baby-friendly hospital programme," he said.

During the event, some 30 of 118 "Merdeka" babies were celebrated. They were born in Tuaran Hospital between Aug 1 and Sept 13, this year.

Also present were State Health senior principal assistant director Dr Abd Kahad Abd Asis, State obstetrics and gynaecology services and department head Datuk Dr Soon Ruey, Tuaran Hospital director Dr G Mohan Gopal Naidoo, as well as Likas Women and Children's Hospital director Dr Tan Bee Hwai. - Ricardo Unto
