Ting Yu, Arena the champions

Kota Kinabalu: Goh Ting Yu and Arena Satu Samin captured the men and women singles titles at the recent Kota Kinabalu City Badminton Association (KKCBA) Closed championship which was held over two days (August 11-12) at the Olympia Badminton Arena here.

The top seeded Goh easily defeated second seed Hanz Haikal Azahawari 21-8, 21-15 in the final while Arena who was seeded first had to dig deep before overcoming fourth seed Goh Shuen Tong in three sets 21-19, 18-21, 21-17.

The competition which was held to select players to represent Kota Kinabalu for the Sabah Closed championship to be held in Sandakan later this month saw Calvin Ong Jia Hong and Adrina Anscelly winning two titles each.

The pair won the mixed doubles title by beating Goh Ting Yu and Goh Shuen Tong 20-22, 21-16, 21-15 in the final. Calvin then partnered Marcel Simon to take the men doubles title with a three sets 19-21, 21-11, 21-15 win over Seddrick Alwyn and Wan Muhd Hidayat while Adrina with Fong Yii Zhi beat Elaine Wee and Rabiatul Muhd Hidayah 21-15, 21-9 for the women doubles title.

There were two veteran events held and the 50 and above category was won by Abu Bakar Suni Matnoor and Yong Thain Vun who defeated Kamaruddin Massa and Lim Mooi Hock 21-18, 21-10 while the 40 above title went to Teo Lip Chai and Yong Thain Vun with a 21-19, 21-8 victory over Kamaruddin Massa and Lim Mooi Hock. – GL Oh
