Putra Jaya: Malaysia has invited Ghana to join the intergovernmental organisation for palm oil producing countries, the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), in addressing challenges faced by the palm oil industry.Deputy Primary Industries Minister Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin disclosed that he made the invitation to Ghana's deputy minister for trade and industry Robert Ahomka-Lindsey when the latter called on him on the sidelines of the 38th Palm Oil Familiarisation Programme (POFP) here on Monday.

"I invited Ghana to join CPOPC and it looks positive. CPOPC needs to increase its membership," he told reporters after opening the programme on behalf of Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok here on Monday.

Malaysia and Indonesia, the world's biggest palm oil producers, are the founding members of the Council.

The governments of Indonesia and Malaysia in 2015 initiated the CPOPC as a common platform to promote palm oil and neutralise trade barriers as both nations collectively produce 85 per cent of the world's consumption of this basic cooking ingredient.

Shamsul Iskandar said Ghana was keen to have a more strategic relationship with Malaysia especially in the palm oil industry.

"Ghana wants Malaysia to share her experience and technical expertise in palm oil," he said.

A total of 71 participants from 20 countries are attending the week-long POFP programme which is hosted by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) until Aug 18, with 17 participants sponsored by the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme under the Foreign Ministry. –Bernama
