SO Sandakan does nation proud

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Special Olympics players from Sandakan, representing SO Malaysia, gave a sterling performance to win one gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the Special Olympics East Asia Regional Bocce Competition which ended in Hong Kong, Wednesday.A total of seven teams took part in the prestigious tournament including those from Korea, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Macau, China Ning Xia, Mongolia and Malaysia. "We are delighted by the astounding performance of our team at this East Asia Regional Competition," said Taren Sunil Manoharan, Chairman of SO Sandakan, whose team had been given the challenging task of representing SO Malaysia at the competition.ADVERTISEMENT "We are truly overjoyed that our Sabah SO team from Sandakan, featuring boys and girls from SMK Muhibbah Sandakan, has brought sports glory to the country in general and to Sabah and Sandakan in particular," added Taren Sunil.The gold medal came from the Mixed Unified Team event which beat their closest rival, Chinese Taipei, to second place while host Hong Kong got the bronze.Meanwhile, Mohd Taufik Samsudin won a silver medal in the men's singles and Nur Ain Ricky also won a silver in the women's singles. A bronze medal came from the Doubles Unified women's event and another bronze was won by Eddie Tsen in men's singles.ADVERTISEMENT To add a little more to their success, the men's Doubles Unified team won a ribbon (4th place) and so did Nur Azura Azman in the women's singles event. Taren Sunil pointed out that this was the first overseas trip for the players to compete in the game of bocce and admitted that he was taken by surprise by the wonderful results."We, Special Olympics Sandakan, cannot describe how proud we are of our players.

Firstly, they were given the green light to represent Special Olympics Malaysia and secondly they came home with a clutch of medals and ribbons," said the elated SO Sandakan Chairman.He expressed his thanks and appreciation to the team leader Maria J. Chang, Florence James (head coach), Shirley Liew (coach), Mohd Huzaimi (unified partner for male players) and Laihun Busu (unified partner for female players). The four male players in the bocce team are Mohd. Taufik Samsudin, Chan Wai Lung, Leong How Guan and Eddie Tsen. The female players are Nur Diana, Nur A. Shazwani, Nur Ain Ricky and Nur Azura."The great results from this outing have given all of us, players as well as officials, very strong motivation to keep our momentum of success going. We have proven that we have got what it takes to win," Taren Sunil emphasised.
