RM4.8mil fake goods seized so far this year

Kota Kinabalu: The Domestic Trade and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNHEP) Sabah seized RM4.8 million worth of fake and pirated goods in a series of raids since January.

KPDNHEP Sabah Deputy Director Ravichandran A/L Vadivellu said the raids were carried out at 19,333 premises in various Sabah districts including Tawau, Sandakan, Keningau, Penampang, Putatan and Tuaran.

He said 388 cases were recorded under various Acts and a total of RM114,481 compounds were issued.

Of the figure, 64 cases were investigated under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

"24 cases involving fake goods were recorded with a seizure of 5,478 units of fake goods carrying an estimated worth of RM103,484.

"Eleven of the 24 cases were issued compounds totalling to RM17,000 while the other 13 are still under investigation.

"As for cases involving optical discs (CDs and DVDs), 21 cases were recorded with a seizure of 51,353 units carrying an estimated worth of RM259,799.

"Four of the 21 cases were issued a total compound of RM4,000 while the other 13 are still under investigation.

"These raids will be on a continual basis and we are still investigating the source of the fake and pirated goods."

he told a press conference on the seizures at the KPDNHEP Exhibit Store in Kolombong, Friday.

Ravichandran added that there are about 13 types of items that KPDNHEP monitors including jerseys, hijabs, shoes, wallets, bags, laptop/mobile phone chargers, USB cables, microphones and USB cables.
