Kota Kinabalu: A Chinese man and a woman were killed after their RAV4 apparently plunged into a monsoon drain near Kendara Court, Penampang, at about 11pm on Thursday.

Chai Chiew Ling, 21, was found in the driver seat while Liu Teck Soon, 22, was found in the passenger seat.

It took firefighters around 20 minutes to extricate the bodies.

The car, which was believed to have overturned during the plunge, was half-submerged in drain water.

According to a witness, the RAV4 reversed and suddenly made a U-turn before it plunged into the drain.

Police and the Fire and Rescue Department are still investigating the cause of the incident.

Sgt Wasli was at the scene.

It was learned that both victims had been working as baristas (coffee experts) at a café in Perdana Park, Tanjung Aru, for about three months. Liu was an experienced barista who had worked at several other premises before. - Jimmy Goh
