Kota Kinabalu: Norzawiyah Bulka (pic), 52, became the first woman to be appointed Director of the Information Department in Sabah which came into effect on June 25. She said the appointment was a tribute to women because it was entrusted to lead the department in Sabah.

"The trust shows that women can also take great responsibility if they are committed to the engagement.

"I look forward to fulfilling the mandate given with dedication and commitment to bring the department's name to success," she said. She also pointed out that the post also came with responsibility.

"My appointment is just like coming home to Sabah, especially being a native of Tawau.

It is indeed a desire to return to the State itself after serving in the Peninsula for 11 years," she said when met at her office in Wisma Dang Bandang, here, Tuesday.

She recorded her appreciation to the Department's Director-General Datuk Ibrahim Abdul Rahman for his trust and blessings rendered to her.

Norzawiyah holds a Bachelor in Mass Communication from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and a Master in Corporate Communications from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with extensive experience in the 28 civil service since 1990.

Prior to this, she was the Deputy Secretary of the Strategic Communications Division of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Ministry and was also a Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Finance.

According to her, the Sabah Information Department will continue to carry out its core tasks as information marketing agencies in line with the current government's requirements not only through face-to-face communication but also through the latest platforms of social media.

"We will continue to empower and diversify the use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instragram and others to intensify the dissemination of information on national policies and government campaigns.

"In the meantime, all members of the department should change the way they think and work in tandem with the current technological developments," she explained.

In conjunction with the national month, Norzawiyah also called on all walks of life to fly the Jalur Gemilang in the spirit of patriotism.

She added that the initiative by members of the Sabah Information Department is to brighten up the national month.

"Government and non-government buildings are also being asked to fly the Jalur Gemilang as a sign of support and love for Malaysia," she said.
