Kuala Lumpur: The government should not deny the rights of the opposition to dispute any matter, in order to ensure the rule of law is applied.Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is Pekan member of parliament, said the walkout staged by opposition MPs had been over a serious matter and therefore should be taken seriously.

He said the objection was not based on sentiments, merely to reject a candidate nominated by the government, but because the procedure had been called into question as it was seen to have contradicted the Standing Orders.

"We have to have a constructive democracy... previously when we were in the government, we were always blamed by the opposition for not being constructive. "The government has to show that the opposition had the right to voice out. Instead, we have been denied that right in the appointment of Dewan Rakyat speaker.

"We are not against it based on the name, but more on failing to follow the standing orders, which is to submit the name 14 days before parliament starts its proceedings," he told reporters at the lobby of Parliament.

Najib said the government's move in denying the opposition of its rights would only create negative perception among the public.

He added that the government had to remember that the institution of parliament was built on the mandate given by the people and rules and procedures of meetings should be honoured.
