Kota Kinabalu: President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will hold a private meeting with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Kuala Lumpur next week.

He would be in the national capital this weekend to watch the title fight between Filipino boxing icon Senator Manny Pacquiao and Lucas Matthysse.

"Duterte's July 15-16 unofficial trip came following the chief executive's phone conversation with Dr Mahathir on Monday evening," Roque said.

During the scheduled meeting on July 16, both Duterte and Mahathir will be discussing issues of bilateral concern including Islamic extremism and piracy in the high seas.

During the phone call, Duterte also congratulated Mahathir on his victory and vowed to closely work with him in addressing pressing regional issues, according to presidential spokesperson Harry Rogue Jr. Duterte last visited Malaysia in November 2016 when he had a bilateral meeting with Najib.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao arrived in Kuala Lumpur with the rest of the Team Pacquiao and his 200-strong entourage last Monday evening, a week ahead of his boat. – Nikko Fabian
