Causing death: Woman, 67, ordered to enter defence

Kota Kinabalu: A 67-year-old woman was ordered to enter her defence on a charge of causing the death of a retired teacher.Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz set May 25 for Chin Su Chin's defence after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Chin, Tuesday.Chin is accused of committing culpable homicide not amounting to murder of her friend Ngui Lim Kiau, 64, at 3pm on Sept 23, 2016 at a house in Kepayan Ridge, near here.

The offence under Section 304 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 30 years, and liability of a fine, on conviction.Eleven prosecution witnesses were called during the hearing.Deputy Public Prosecutor Husna Abdul Halim prosecuted while Chin was represented by counsel Idris Ibrahim.Meanwhile, 16 people, including a woman, were jailed four and five months each for illegal entry.

The foreigners aged between 20 and 52 were handed the sentence after they pleaded guilty to entering the State without any valid document.Twelve of the men were also handed a stroke of the cane each.

They were arrested in separate locations in the city, Penampang, Papar, Tuaran and Manggatal, recently.After completing their jail sentence, the foreigners were ordered referred to the Immigration Department. – Cynthia D Baga
