Kota Kinabalu: Youth and Sports Minister Frankie Poon sympathised with Sabah Tennis Association (STA) on the absence of tennis as medal sport in this year Sukma Games in Perak.STA president Johnson Koh who paid a visit to the Minister at his office on Tuesday told Frankie that Sabah will not be able to repeat their success in the previous Games in Kuching where they won one gold and a bronze following the decision to omit the sport in this year's Games.

"Not only here in Sabah but the entire tennis community in the country were left disappointed with the decision as tennis is the world's second most popular sport.

"We are now hoping that the new Federal Youth and Sports Minister will do something positive on this with the efforts by the national body to include the sport, and we also hope our new State minister will team up with the Sarawak minister and their counterparts in the peninsula to give their support." he said.

According to him, seven other states had urged MSN to reconsider their decision to list tennis as a medal sport and not merely as selected sport with no medal to fight for in this year's meet.

"With all the facilities available throughout the country, there is no reason to not include the sport and furthermore some of our players started their preparation six years ago and they may not be able to compete if it is to be held in the next Games," he added.

Frankie on hearing the argument said his ministry will give their full support on their quest.

"Looking at the situation faced by tennis, the ministry will give full support in helping the sport and also other sports so that they will raise their bar further in their respective fields," he said. - GL Oh
