Four killed in Ranau crash
Ranau: Four people – two men and two women – were killed while two others seriously injured after a Proton Saga BLM collided with an express bus at 2pm along Km 39, Jalan Ranau-Telupid, Thursday. Their identities were still unavailable at press time.

District Police Chief, DSP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said initial investigations found that the Saga was heading from Ranau to Telupid.

"Upon arriving at the scene, the Saga driver was suspected to have lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the side of the road before colliding into a bus coming from the opposite direction.

"Four victims died at the scene while two other survivors were sent to Ranau Hospital for emergency treatment.

The bus driver and its 29 passengers escaped unscathed," he said, when contacted.

District Fire and Rescue Department Chief, Jimmy Lagung said a fire engine with eight personnel, including himself, was at the scene upon receiving a distress call at 2.30pm.

"The team acted quickly to extricate the trapped victims before conducting an inspection to ensure there were no other dangers at the scene," he said. The operation ended at 4pm.

In another case, a lorry driver rammed his vehicle into a steel railing, roofed walkway and an electric pole to avoid crashing into traffic when the lorry's brake system malfunctioned.

According to Farhan, the incident occurred in front of the Ranau Petron station, about 100 metres from IPD Ranau, at about 4pm on Wednesday.

"The lorry, which was carrying bricks, was on its way from Tamparuli and heading towards Ranau town.

When it reached the scene, the brake system suddenly failed. In front of the lorry was a long traffic queue.

"To avoid crashing the lorry onto the row of cars, the driver manoeuvred the vehicle to the left side of the road, where it rammed into a steel railing and roofed walkway before it went into a bush, hitting an electric pole in the process," he said.

Fortunately, no one was injured. The lorry was slightly damaged on its front side while the town amenities involved were also damaged. He said the incident is investigated under Kaedah 10 LN 166/59.

Observations at the scene showed a paved and dry road surface, clear visuals in daylight and slightly heavy traffic at the time of the incident. - Clarence GD
