Published on: Thursday, May 17, 2018

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Gerald Gadit from the Youth Cup squad has been called up for the National Under 19 squad training cum selection session to be held at Wisma FAM and also in Bangkok, Thailand from May 20-June 4.

He was among 27 players listed by FAM to prepare for the AFF Under 19 tournament to be held in Indonesia from June 29-July 15.

However, four names will be dropped before the team proceeds to Bangkok for the training camp on May 29 where they will stay until June 4.

Gerald who hails from Tenom can play in both left and right back positions. He made his debut in the Youth Cup competition last season and is currently registered with the under-21 President Cup squad.

He is more of a back up player for the President Cup team this season and was called upon in several occasions to stand in for regulars such as Zaki Sapri and Evan Wensley Wenceslaus when they are not available due to suspensions or injuries.

He said on Wednesday that he was caught by surprise with the call-up.

"I was shocked when I received the news. I did not expect that to happen so soon but I am very happy and will try my very best to make the final list," he said.

Meanwhile, Youth Cup head coach Aiyyman Johny Abdullah congratulated Gerald and hope he will be successful in the trial.

"Congratulation to him and I hope he will give his best to get selected into the national squad.

"He is very strong both physically and mentally. Technically he is a very fine defensive player," he added. - GL Oh
