Kuala Lumpur: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is still waiting for the official notice on a national athlete who won a bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, said to have failed a doping test conducted by the Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia (Adamas).OCM Secretary-General Datuk Low Beng Choo said the council was only told unofficially that a national athlete was found positive for using a banned substance. The test was believed conducted by Adamas before the national contingent left for Gold Coast and the result was only known after the athlete had competed there.

"I am unable to give any comments on the matter as it was still in the process.

We only knew that there was a case after Adamas had conducted the tests...we are still waiting for further information as it was still in the process.

"We in OCM want to obtain the information in order to advise on what should be done by all parties concerned including the athlete," she said.

Meanwhile, Adamas director, Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz said in principle, if someone is found positive, Adamas cannot reveal anything on the matter until the sports association had made the announcement.

"Only after the announcement had been made and revealed to the public, can we (Adamas) reveal any other relevant information to give clarity to the situation," he said.

The latest doping case was a major setback for the national contingent after failing to meet the target of the top 10 position in the Commonwealth Games held from April 4 to 15 when Malaysia was placed 12th in the overall medal tally with a collection of seven gold, five silver and 12 bronze medals.

The 12 bronze medals were garnered by Muhamad Afiq Mohamad Ali Hanafiah (para athlete, men's 100m T12); Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (men's badminton doubles); Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles badminton); Leong Mun Yee-Nur Dhabitah Sabri (diving synchronised 10m platform); Leong Mun Yee-Nur Dhabitah Sabri (diving synchronised 3m springboard) and Amy Kwan Dict Weng (rhythmic gymnastics – individual overall and hoops).

Also winning bronze medals were Koi Sie Yan (rhythmic gymnastics – ribbon), Alia Sazana Azahari (shooting women's 25m pistol), Muhammad Nafiizwan Adnan (squash men's singles), Ho Ying-Karen Lyne (women's table tennis doubles) and Muhamad Fazrul Azrie Mohdad (weightlifting men's 85kg).

There were two doping cases involving Malaysian athletes in major championships namely diver Ng Yan Yee was found positive for sibutramine in the 2017 SEA Games while wushu exponent, Tai Cheau Xuen failed the doping test in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea in which the gold medals of both athletes were withdrawn. – Bernama
