Cops denies firing shot at colleague

Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old police man was charged at the Magistrate's Court with firing a shot towards his colleague four years ago.Mohd Aniff Abdullah, who appeared before Magistrate Afiq Agoes, pleaded not guilty to committing the offence at 7.35pm on April 22, 2014 at the office of the Deputy Officer-in-Charge of Luyang Police Station.

He is accused of firing a shot towards Richie Bejon Asing with a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver which caused injury to the latter.

The charge under Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960 carries a jail term of up to two years or fine of up to RM5,000 or both on conviction. Inspector Lim Swee Beng, prosecuting, proposed bail at RM2,000.

However, Aniff, who was unrepresented, requested for a lower amount saying he has been suspended from work.

The court set May 8 for case management and released Aniff on a bail of RM1,600 in two sureties.

In another case, a jobless man was fined RM2,600 or 20 months jail for selling a stolen smartphone for RM160.

Degy requested for a fine, saying he has to attend a course soon but Lim applied for an appropriate sentence on the grounds that Degy had cause RM3,000 losses to the complainant.

Degy had committed an offence under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both on conviction. – Jo Ann Mool
