Man jailed three years for armed robbery

Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old man was sentenced to three years' jail for robbing a woman armed with a machete.Mohd Syafiq Akmal Mohd Sukri pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim, Thursday.He robbed Rita Maah, 47, of two handphones, a power bank and RM1,130 at the Kedai Runcit Ala Mambo in Kg Bontoi, Tamparuli at 2.35pm on Oct 8, 2017.

Mohd Shafiq committed the offence together with an accomplice still at large.The offence under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, on conviction.Mohd Shafiq's social report showed that he had committed several offences before.The report also suggested that Mohd Shafiq was not suitable to undergo community services.

In mitigation, counsel Chong Kian Ming who represented Mohd Shafiq asked for leniency.However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Dinesh Raja urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, considering the seriousness and rampancy of the offence as well as public interest.
