Kota Kinabalu: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan firmly believes that the proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is the best option to solve traffic woes here. Abdul Rahman, who is also Minister in charge of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), said the BRT was the way forward in ensuring smooth traffic flow, especially in congestion-prone Kota Kinabalu.

He said this in response to claims by Junz Wong of Parti Warisan Sabah that they are able to offer a better solution to reduce traffic congestion by upgrading the minibus system.

"As much as upgrading the existing network of minibus system is important, after undertaking various studies under the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and relevant agencies, I firmly believe that the BRT is the best option at present time," he said.

Rahman said Junz also accused him of not understanding the plight of ordinary Sabahans who use minibuses as a daily mode of transportation.

"The issue of having minibuses is not only a matter of reliability, punctuality or convenience to the commuters but also to solve the traffic congestion and to ensure buses are not caught in the middle of the traffic," said Rahman.

He said the Barisan Nasional government will always strive to find solutions but, on the other hand, Junz's new party Warisan will continue to complain without having a viable alternative solution to reduce the concerns of Sabahans.

"It is true that for Sabahans to enjoy a better public transportation system, they need to 'invest' more in the form of higher fares but rest assured the Government will ensure that the BRT fares will be within the affordable range for all Sabahans," he said.

He said apart from BRT, the Government has approved the upgrading of the constantly congested stretch between Indah Permai junction to Yayasan Sabah and straight to the Sabah International Convention Centre.

"This will eventually ease congestion along this road and at the same time guarantee the public of a smooth and efficient BRT journey."

Rahman said while the people of Sabah are ready and excited to move forward with this significant leap of public transportation system in this city, Junz and his party are still stuck behind and seem uncertain of what they have in mind.

"My advice to Junz is, if he has nothing else to convince the people of Sabah, try to convince them on how he can easily change his stance from labelling Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as mastermind behind Project IC to become his avid supporter and choice as Prime Minister."
