Kota Kinabalu: Semporna Umno leader Datuk Ainal Fattah said the promise by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to build a bridge to the newly declared sub-district of Pulau Bum Bum "exposed another lie by (opposition Parti Warisan Sabah President) Datuk Shafie Apdal"."Shafie had repeatedly promised the people that the bridge will be built. After it never happened for many years, the people began to question and he told them it was because the project was blocked by Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman. But this is not true. It's now been proven that Shafie lied after Musa himself requested the Prime Minister to approve the bridge," he said in a statement.

Ainal, who is an Umno branch chief of Kg Balembang in Pulau Bum Bum, said Shafie could have seen through the construction of the bridge, especially during his time as Minister of Rural and Regional Development, but failed to do so to the disappointment of thousands of residents.

Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, when tabling the 2009 Budget in the Parliament, announced a RM3bil allocation for Sabah covering construction of infrastructure and various public amenities in the state, including the building of a Semporna-Pulau Bum-Bum bridge.

"After a long wait causing the people to be puzzled about the status of the proposed bridge, Musa took the initiative to request the Prime Minister to approve it. It sent a huge relief and gave fresh hope to the people because the bridge will spur development in the island that has about 30,000 residents," he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, during his recent work visit to Semporna, promised infrastructure upgrades before a 10,000-strong crowd if Barisan Nasional wins again in the 14th General Election.

Other than the bridge, he promised the upgrading the dual-lane road from Kunak junction to Semporna town.

Ainal noted that Najib had reportedly said he entrusted the former Umno vice-president with bringing development to rural areas in his capacity the Rural and Regional Development Minister, but the latter refused to heed his advice to work with Musa.

According to him, the island's sub-district status approved by Musa will launch it toward better development.

"Islanders have been longing for this. To them, where Shafie had failed, Musa came to give them hope," he said.
