Ranau: A 16-year-old schoolgirl was killed and another seriously injured after they were hit by a towing vehicle along Jalan Ranau-Telupid, near Kampung Matupang, here, Tuesday. The students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Matupang, who were in school uniforms, were waking back home not far from the scene when the tragedy occurred at 3.30pm.

Ranau District Police Chief DSP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the deceased was identified as Nor Aliz Khairunnisya Azazahari and the injured as Elcy binti Hairyson, 15.

He said the 33-year-old towing vehicle driver sustained injuries to his arms and legs.

Initial investigations showed the towing vehicle driver, from Kampung Matupang, was on his way to the scene of another accident that occurred earlier.

"Upon reaching the location, the driver skidded out of control and ploughed the vehicle onto the two girls walking in the opposite direction on the road shoulder," said Farhan, adding that the victims were sent to the Ranau Hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, in another accident at 2.30pm the same day, the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser Superking was killed on the spot following a collision with a 21-tonne Nissan lorry.

Sulaiman Harianto, 28, from Kg Sri Jaya Semporna, was from Kota Kinabalu and heading towards Semporna with two other passengers who suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan.

It was learnt that the deceased lost control of his vehicle at the Taviu Hill area along Jalan Ranau-Sandakan, entered the opposite lane and collided with the lorry.

Another vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, travelling behind the Superking rammed onto the backside of the ill-fated vehicle before skidding into a nearby ditch.

Both the driver and passenger of the Hilux were unharmed despite their vehicle being badly damaged.

Farhan said the lorry driver had left the scene when police arrived.
