SEPANG: The government has ironed out issues related to logistics procedures at the Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ) to speed up cargo clearance and make Malaysia more attractive in the global e-commerce segment, said Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Yasmin Mahmood.Yasmin, however, said the domestic logistics player needed to work around the clock to ensure that they fulfilled the international requirements.

"There are some teething issues initially when setting up the DFTZ. Things are smoother now and we have managed to clear the cargoes in less than three hours," she said at the media conference on DFTZ Pilot Project here on Monday.

It was reported that 25 freight forwarders already operated in Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Over 60 per cent of the current cargo volume was handled by the local carriers and was poised to capture the huge potential growth in the e-commerce segment.

"The smoother processes in the DFTZ would push local players to export and DFTZ is positioned as Alibaba's mega transhippment hub outside China," she said.

Meanwhile, on the aspiration to create one million digital entrepreneurs within five years, she said, it was possible as entrepreneurship has been embedded in the curriculum through technical and vocational education and training and universities.

She said MDEC was also working closely with the Federal Land Development Authority to help encourage the children at the schemes to embark on digital entrepreneurship.

"It would be a big mistake if we do not admit that digital economy is the huge opportunity.

The whole world as well as our neighbouring countries have stressed on the digital economy.

"DFTZ is a key initiative under the digital economy, among others, and in fact China is a big export destination.

The Gateway to China is expected to record sales of between RM9.2 million and RM30.6 million via Tmall Direct Import," she said. –Bernama
