Sam: Dept serious to continue excellence
Sandakan: Sabah's Chief Conservator of Forests Datuk Sam Mannan urged State Forestry Department personnel to remain committed in their duties and enhance their mastery of English. He also wanted more personnel to be creative and well trained with the latest skills and techniques.

"The department has drafted the best plan to ensure the aim is achieved, apart from studying its future needs," he said during the Forest Guard Certificate presentation ceremony at the State Forestry Department headquarters, here, Thursday.

"We want our personnel to be well trained and achieve excellence wherever they are posted.

"Previously, the expertise of our personnel was also recognised by foreign countries like Papua New Guinea."

Sam also reminded forest guards to be wise in handling poaching issues.

"A small group of forest guards will be formed to protect forest reserves from the intrusion of poachers, including in Danam Valley and Imbak," he said.

On the certificate presentation ceremony, Sam said it was a testament of the seriousness of the department to continue its excellence, especially by training its personnel.

Some 44 trainees were presented with their certificates after they finished a one-year course at the Sabah Forestry Institute in Telupid.

During the training period, trainees were taught on the various disciplines of sustainable forest management (SFM) such as forestry laws, surveys and reduced impact logging (RIL), among others.

Sam said the course offered by the institute was one of the efforts to improve forestry knowledge among Forestry Department personnel as well as to produce more efficient, talented and knowledgeable staff.

Earlier, Sabah Forestry Institute Principal Bernard Valentine said the Forest Guard course is one of the training courses provided for the department's personnel.

"The course is conducted for 12 months and each trainee was exposed to various important subjects on forest management," he said.

He added that the institute will continue to improve the course syllabus and practical training method so that the learning quality level is maintained.

"As the oldest forestry institute in Sabah, it also offers a two-year Forest Ranger course as well as various other short-term forestry courses."

To date, the State Forestry Department has produced a total of 1,347 field personnel since the establishment of the first Forestry Training School in Sepilok in 1973.

Of the number, 253 are forest rangers while 1,094 are trained personnel in forest guarding.

This year, some 35 trainees are still undergoing the forest guard course and is scheduled to complete it by end of the year. - Mardinah Jikur
