Work on RM67.8m Syariah Court Complex begins

Kota Kinabalu: A more conducive Syariah Court awaits Muslims when the Syariah Court Complex over five acres next to City Mosque in Likas Bay here is ready in 2020.Work on the Federal-funded RM67.86 million four-storey complex started on Nov 9, last year and is scheduled to be completed in 30 months or on May 8, 2020.Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman said he was very pleased that the long-awaited project to facilitate the Muslims and officers, judges and personnel of the Sabah Syariah Judiciary Department has finally materialised.ADVERTISEMENT "On behalf of the State government, I fully thank the Federal Government for providing us with the allocation."During my working visit to the site with Sabah Syarie Court Judge Datuk Jasri Mat Jakir, State Public Works Department Director Datuk Amrullah Kamal and senior officials, I am pleased with the progress and I hope it would be completed on schedule."We have been waiting for this project and it is now being constructed. This is actually our way, the Barisan Nasional (BN) way, in making sure development projects are brought to Sabah," he told reporters after visiting the project site with Amrullah, Jasri and Lands and Surveys Department Director Datuk Safar Untong, Friday.Meanwhile, Head of Project Team from the Public Works Department, Liaw Vui Phing, told reporters that the complex will have one Appeal Court, two halls for Syariah High Court and three halls for Lower Syariah Court as well as offices that can accommodate 83 staff.ADVERTISEMENT He said there will be support blocks to house a sub-station electricity, security booths and solid disposal area and relevant infrastructures.To a question, he admitted that the groundbreaking ceremony was done in 2015 but later it was held back temporarily due to settlement of the reclamation lands which approval must be obtained and also due to budget constraints.

Last year in July, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif cum Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) Chairman was reported saying the first floor of Muis building would be refurbished and upgraded as a temporary place for the Sabah Syariah Courts and its administration offices.He said the first floor was being converted into Sabah Syariah Court as its current building was not conducive and not safe when the upper floor was gutted by few years ago. - Hayati Dzulkifli
