Stealing smartphone: Jobless jailed 2 years

Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man, who stole a smartphone from a woman in Putatan last month, was sentenced to 24 months' jail.Haszamain Harun, 26, admitted before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to stealing the gadget from one Rafiya Farvin at 12.16am on Feb 26 in front of the One Place Mall.The fact of the case stated that on the said day while Rafiya was opening the bonnet of her vehicle as smoke was coming out from it, a stranger approached her introducing himself as a mechanic.

The stranger, later identified as Haszamain told Rafiya that the vehicle's radiator was running out of water and then asked her to shine a torchlight at the engine for inspection.Rafiya switched on the torchlight on her handphone and handed it to Haszamain who directed the light to the engine before fleeing with the handphone.Haszamain was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years on conviction.In another court, three people were fined a total of RM5,000 for drink-driving.

Helen was ordered to pay a fine of RM2,000 or two weeks' jail while Jali and Michell were each fined RM1,500 or two weeks jail.

The offence, under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides for a fine of between RM1,000 and RM6,000 or jail of up to 12 months on conviction. - Jo Ann Mool
