Sabah skipper gets national call-up

Kuala Lumpur: Sabah skipper Rawilson Batuil has been called up to attend centralised training with the national team beginning this Sunday.Rawilson is among the 15 new faces called up by national coach Tan Cheng Hoe on Tuesday.

Bernama reported that according to a Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) statement, Cheng Hoe who has been in charge of the national squad since December 7, also called up Kedah midfielder Muhammad Ariff Farhan Mat Isa as well as two mixed-race players from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) – Natxo Insa and La'Vere Corbin-Ong to complete his 29-man shortlist.

Cheng Hoe also included nine players from the national Under-23 squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2018 AFC Championships in China last January.

They are goalkeeper Muhammad Haziq Nadzli, Akhyar Rashid, Syazwan Andik Ishak, Irfan Zakaria, Matthew Davies, Syahmi Safari, Safawi Rasid, Nor Azam Abdul Azih and Under-23 skipper Adam Nor Azlin.

The new line-up also sees Cheng Hoe retaining 14 of the 23 players who featured in the two 2019 Asian Cup qualifying matches against North Korea which were played at the I-Mobile Stadium, Buriram in Thailand Nov 10 and 13. Malaysia lost both matches with identical 1-4 scorelines.

The nine players dropped are two goalkeepers – Izham Tarmizi Roslan and Khairulazhan Khalid, Shahrom Kalam, Azrif Nasrulhaq Badrul Hisham, Nazirul Naim Che Hashim, Amirul Azhan Aznan, Ahmad Khairil Anuar Zamri, Hadin Azman and Syamer Kutty Abba.

The centralised training at Wisma FAM, Kelana Jaya is preparation for the national team for their friendly match against Mongolia at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on March 22.

The national team will face Lebanon in their final 2019 Asia Cup qualifying Group B match at the Camille Chamoun Sports City, Beirut, Lebanon on March 27.

Malaysia failed to qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates and are last in their four-team group with a single point after 5 matches.
