Kuala Lumpur: The June 8 release date for the jailed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim can still change, says the Home Ministry."The sentence and release date of a prisoner can change if the inmate violates prison rules, which will lead to the disqualification of his remission under Prisons Regulations," said the Ministry in a written reply to Gooi Hsiao-Leung (PKR-Alor Setar).

The Ministry confirmed that Anwar's scheduled release date is June 8, as given by the Prisons Department.

It said the date of Anwar's release was calculated based on the Prisons Act 1995 and the Prisons Regulations 2000, which allows early release for Anwar with a one-third remission of his prison sentence.

Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail term after losing his appeal at the Federal Court in 2015 to set aside his conviction on a charge of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in 2008.

"Anwar's actual release date falls on June 10, but as it is a Sunday and the preceding day a Saturday, he can be released on June 8 (Friday)," said the Ministry.
