Lahad Datu: Police here launched a manhunt to track down a local who escaped from a police van that was ferrying him to court at 9.30am, Thursday.District Police Chief ACP Hamzah Ahmad said the incident occurred when the suspect, Ibrahim Gabra, 31, was being transported from the Kunak Police Headquarters to court.

He said Gabra was handcuffed together with another suspect, who sat at the rear side of the van.

He managed to un-cuff himself, jumped out of the van through the rear door before running towards the bushes.

"The escorting members stopped the van and pursued the suspect but failed to capture him.

The suspect was believed to have ran towards the Dewan Tun Mustapha area and changed his clothes as the purple lock-up uniform was found in the area," he said.

Hamzah said a manhunt through Ops Tutup in cooperation with the K9 Unit was launched immediately to track down the suspect and efforts are still ongoing to locate his whereabouts.

It was learnt that the suspect from Kampung JKR Lama Kunak was previously detained under Section 7 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

Meanwhile, some villagers of Kampung Pancuran, here, claimed that the suspect came to their village to borrow a hacksaw, believed to cut his handcuff.

The suspect claimed that he was a soldier but left the village with his hand, wrapped in black cloth, still cuffed after he failed to borrow the hacksaw.

The suspect was last seen wearing a white shirt and camouflage short pants. - Eifa Rizan
