Labuan: The Chairman of the Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (LCCC), Datuk Wong Kii Yii, has been given the "honorary credential" of being a representative of the Chinese Consulate-General in Sabah in co-ordinating matters relating to China and Labuan.Wong was handed the credential in a simple ceremony held in Kota Kinabalu by the Chinese Consul General in Sabah, Liang Chaide, recently. At the same event, seven others from various districts in Sabah were also appointed.

Wong said he was deeply honoured by the recognition and "would work hard to enhance ties between Labuan and China in matters related to tourism, trade and culture."He said the appointment by the Chinese government reflected trust in him and also for the convenience of Chinese nationals on holiday or other reasons here who need emergency assistance.
"Through the appointment, those visiting Chinese nationals can get assistance immediately in some matters here without having to go to the consulate in Kota Kinabalu," added Wong.He said Malaysia was now in the Chinese tourism and trade map and dealings between the two countries have improved.

"Having an appointed official here is beneficial to both Labuan and China," he added, without elaborating on the scope of his responsibilities.

Recently, a China Foreign Ministry official was reported saying that about 700 Chinese nationals were killed while on holiday overseas and a third of them died in water-related activities.

Over the past few years, Sabah and Labuan have seen a significant increase in the number of tourists from China and it is believed that with an appointed representative emergency services can be more easily available when needed. - Sohan Das
