Putra Jaya: The Youth and Sports Ministry has emerged as the first ministry to accept cashless payment via the vcash application introduced by Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd.The application can be used at three locations at the Ministry's building here, namely Rimau Cafe, KBS Gym and Teratai Cafe.

vcash is a mobile payment application that offers Malaysians easy solutions via smartphones.

It can be downloaded for free on  Apple App Store and Google Play.

Speaking to reporters after the launch of  the vcash initiative by Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin, DiGi's Chief Digital Officer, Praveen Rajan said consumers not only can make payments, but also send, request and store money on their smartphones via the application.

"We want to expand the use of vcash and not just by Digi customers. Given that 70 per cent of Malaysians are smartphone users, it has the potential to be a solution because it is easier and safer, " he added.

Praveen said as a local telecommunications operator with about 11.7 million subscribers, the level of receipt of vcash by its customers would be on the rise in the future.

He said vcash would yield positive results over the next three years following Bank Negara Malaysia's  move in encouraging the use of cashless solutions for various services and product purchases in the country.

"Steps need to be taken by e-wallet operators to increase awareness of the effectiveness, ease and safety of the applications," he said.

Currently, vcash can be used at physical touchpoints such as food and beverage outlets  and online merchants under the MOLPay and iPay88 payment  gateway networks, as well as purchase gaming credits, including Garena Shells and Steam Wallet, telco prepaid top ups, shopping vouchers and pay utility bills. –Bernama
