Charged with robbing woman using machete

Kota Kinabalu: A 41-year-old local was charged with robbing a woman with a machete.Carlsten Freddie Japat pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad after the charge was read to him on Wednesday.

He allegedly robbed one Marianne Zelarince Vetus, 26, of a handphone, a MyKad, two ATM cards, a driving licence, four house and office keys and RM200 by using the machete.

The offence allegedly took place at 10pm on Jan 10 this year at the compound of a house in Kobusak Villa, Penampang.

Carlsten was charged under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 14 years and whipping, on conviction.

The court set March 27 for case management and July 23 to hear the case.

Carlsten who was not represented was ordered remanded further pending the date.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hafizah Zahida Abdullah appeared for the prosecution.

Meanwhile, in the Magistrate's Court, Carlsten also claimed trial to having a sword.

Carlsten is accused of having the weapon in the public without valid permit at 2.22pm on Jan 27 this year at Penampang area.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie fixed March 2 for case management and offered him bail at RM2,500 in two local sureties.
