Wira, Hilux favourite models among Malaysian car thieves

Kuala Lumpur: General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) revealed that Proton Wira and Toyota Hilux are the most targeted vehicle models by car thieves in the country.Its Chief Executive Officer, Mark Lim, told NST a total of 654 units of Wira and 537 units of Hilux were recorded for vehicle theft insurance claims in the last 12 months.

However, according to the statistics issued by PIAM, vehicle insurance claims involving private cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles have declined by 23 per cent last year compared to the previous year.

Lim said on average, insurance companies paid RM14.7 million daily for vehicle insurance claims last year, with a whopping total of RM5.38 billion.

"The number showed 7 per cent increase compared to the RM5.02 billion in the same period in the previous 12 months. The claims comprised of accidents, damages and theft cases.

"The number is alarming as insurance companies have to fork out more to pay for the claims and it requires more initiatives to prevent cases such as thefts," he told a media briefing on the performances of general insurance sector in Malaysia at Wisma PIAM, here.

Meanwhile, he said Perodua Kancil was ranked at third in terms of vehicle theft insurance claims with 378 units, Proton Iswara (340), Perodua MyVi (290), Proton Waja (231), Proton Saga (214), Honda Civic (133), Honda City (119) and Toyota Vios (117).

Lim said a total of 5,625 private cars have been recorded for vehicle theft insurance claims, a drop from 7,610 units the previous year.

"Meanwhile, 8,874 units of motorcycles claimed for vehicle theft insurance, a reduction from 11,009 units in 2016 and 824 units of commercial vehicles made the claims, compared to 1,386 units in previous year."

He said the establishment of Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia Berhad (VTREC) has also given positive impact in the efforts to curb vehicle theft, adding that it has been reflected on the declining annual total.

"VTREC not only involves insurance operators, it has also obtained the cooperation from the police, Transport Ministry, Road Transport Department and the support from Bank Negara Malaysia," he said.

Meanwhile, the number of vehicle thefts on the basis of frequency showed Toyota Vellfire (112 units) and Mitsubishi Pajero (77 units) to be among the 'hot' models that were often reported stolen in 2017 at 0.26 percent.

Among other models that are often stolen included Toyota Hilux, Peugeot 308, Peugeot 508, Nissan Vanette, Lexus RX350, BMW 7, Proton Perdana and Ford Courier.
