Deputy Director, 3 others remanded

Kota Kinabalu: A Deputy Director of a government department and three others have been remanded for seven days to facilitate investigation into alleged misappropriation in a transport infrastructure project in Sabah.The three others included an assistant engineer at a government department and a company director. Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus granted the remand application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), represented by its prosecuting officer, Mohd Faliq Basirudin, Tuesday.

The four, aged between 37 and 58, were detained by MACC on Monday for investigation under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. Following their arrest, the commission also seized several vehicles, a certain amount of cash and froze several bank accounts.Meanwhile, MACC has detained an engineering consultant to allow probe into the Penang undersea tunnel project.The woman, in her 50s, was arrested when she arrived at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya at 6.10pm on Tuesday.

A source familiar with the investigations said the consultant is believed to be involved in the preparation of fictitious claim documents to the tune of RM305 million for the feasibility studies of the projects involving three main roads and the undersea tunnel to the State Government.The source added that the MACC is investigating whether there were other individuals involved in abetting the falsifying of the documents. - Cynthia D Baga
