Having Malayan sun bear parts case delayed

Kota Kinabalu: The Sessions Court adjourned decision on a case involving a 33-year-old local man charged with having body parts of Malayan sun bears without any permit. Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad postponed the decision to Jan 30 for Tijelo Jacquinn Kuin after being informed by counsel Arthur Borine who stood in for counsel Martin Tommy that one of Martin's relative had passed away. Tijelo, who was represented by Martin, is accused of having eight bear paws, eight canine teeth and two gall bladders at 12.10pm on Aug 8, 2016 at the parking lot in Tanjung Aru near the Shangri-la Tanjung Aru Resort, here.

He allegedly had the body parts of the endangered species animal which is fully protected under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.The offence under Section 41(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to five years, or both, on conviction.On Nov 27, 2017, Tijelo was ordered to enter his defence after the court ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against him.Five prosecution and two defence witnesses were called during the hearing.

Prosecuting Officer Abdul Karim Dakog of the Wildlife Department conducted the prosecution.Meanwhile, a woman was fined of total RM10,000 for having unregistered products and cosmetics without labels.
