Samurai stunt: Filipino jailed

Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old Filipino who carried a Samurai sword in public was sentenced to five years' jail and ordered given one stroke of the cane.Unemployed Abdul Raja Hasan pleaded guilty before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus on Monday to having the dangerous weapon at 2am on Jan 13 at a house in the squatters' area of Taman Mahkota, Luyang.

Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting, told the court that Abdul Raja was spotted in a suspicious manner by a police team conducting an operation in the area.

Abdul Raja ran towards the bushes when the police wanted to inspect him but the police managed to nab him and found the weapon on him.

The police also found he has no valid document to stay in the country.

He had committed an offence under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapon Act 1958 which carries a jail term of between five years and 10 years on conviction.

Earlier, Abdul Raja was jailed four months and ordered given one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court for illegal entry.

In another case, a local man claimed trial to assisting in selling 11 packets of instant beverage powder.

Trader Mohd Salleh Mohd Rauf, 29, is accused of disposing of the items belonging to one Mohd Sadik Mhd Jaafar to one Fayaz Said between 5am and 7am on Jan 8 at Kg Cenderamata 2 in Likas.

The charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both on conviction.

The court set Feb 19 for mention and released Mohd Salleh on a bail of RM5,000 in two sureties. - Jo Ann Mool
