Semporna: Construction of a new RM8 million market (Pasar Awam Sejahtera) here is another proof of the Barisan Nasional's concern for the needs of the people, said State Finance Assistant Minister Datuk Ramlee Marahaban. He said the project, expected to be completed in 18 months, will certainly provide convenience and comfort to the people.

"The new market to be equipped with various facilities is to replace the old one that is facing and contributing to several problems, including garbage," he said at a ceremony to present the project's warrant to its contractor, here, Saturday.

He added that the new market on a 1.5 acre site will provide a total of 171 tables for fish, chicken/ meat and vegetables/dried seafood.

"The new market will give priority to local traders, especially the licensed operators at the old market, and the authorities will ensure that the lots in the market will only be rented to local people," said Ramlee.

He also said the project is one of the efforts of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to transform Semporna.

"There are still many plans that will be implemented to develop and transform the district.

We (the leadership) have a long vision to develop this area for the wellbeing of the people," he said, adding that this is the agenda of BN government, which is to develop the country and the people.

Meanwhile, Ramlee, who is also Sabah Umno information deputy chief, said Saturday's event also dismissed all opposition claims that the BN government's plans were only a gimmick.

He said the Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman had always been committed to fulfilling the promises made.

"We (Barisan nasional) always take into account the long-term benefits of the people in every development that has been planned or implemented.

"What people should understand is the plans need times to implement and BN only talks about things that can be done," he added. - Efa Rizan
