Cuepacs hopes govt will not abolish pension scheme

Kota Baru: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) hopes that the government will not abolish the civil servants pension scheme and it will continue as the current salary is viewed as insufficient for them to have enough savings.Its president Datuk Azih Muda said Cuepacs was very thankful to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for announcing various incentives to police pensioners recently.

"At the same time, we hope the government will give equal consideration to other government retirees as they also need some assistance" he told reporters after the briefing on the Transformation of the Public Services: Civil Servants' Issues and Challenges at the Kota Darul Naim Complex here Thursday.

Azih said currently there were about 750,000 government pensioners in the country who still received pensions and based on the survey conducted by Cuepacs, the salary of civil servants was still insufficient to address the rising cost of living.

He added that it was even worse when taking into consideration the cost of buying a house which was a necessity as everyone who wished to start a family must have a home.

He said Cuepacs also hoped that the salary increase would be prioritised as it was the only way to help the civil servants to cope and to assist them to spur the country's real estate industry.

"Many affordable housing projects are implemented by the government such as the Rumah Mampu Milik (RMM), 1Malaysia People's Housing Programme (PR1MA), MyHome and so on but with their current salary, the houses are still beyond their reach," he said.

He added that it was highly appropriate and timely that the government gave consideration on the salary increase among the civil servants and this is what all civil servants in the country wish for. – Bernama
