Operation to save Semporna coral reefs from destruction
Semporna: Some 1,530 Mahkota Turi (COT) pests were destroyed by the Sabah Fisheries Department in a two-day operation in the Singgahmaya, Mantabuan and Sibuan waters on Tuesday and Wednesday.Sabah Fisheries Director Dr Ahemad Sade said the operation was to save coral reefs using a drug injection method to predators that would kill them within 24 hours.

He said the operation through the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) was implemented with Sabah Parks, Inno Resource Dev Sdn Bhd and Seahorse Adventure Sdn Bhd.

He said the pest infestation should be controlled for it had caused coral reef destruction of up to 40 per cent, affecting the tourism industry in the area.

He also said the coral reef ecosystem is very important, especially in the marine environment, as it is also a place for various species of fish to eat, breed, grow and take shelter.

In fact, the coral reef ecosystem is full of unique aquarium flora and fauna, besides its natural beauty with clear water as a tourist attraction.

He added that the operation will continue to be implemented and enhanced with other relevant parties to ensure that coral reefs in Sabah waters are healthy and preserved. - Lagatah Toyos
