Sabah Prison orchestra

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Prisons Department and Malaysia Music Teachers Training College have collaborated in a project to create musicians from among inmates at Kota Kinabalu central prison to form an orchestra.

Sabah and Labuan Prisons director Suria Idris said the project was the first of its kind in Malaysia involving prisoners as members of an orchestra.

"The project, expected to span three years, targets the involvement of 100 inmates to form a Prison Orchestra in 2020.

"For the first phase this year, 24 inmates have been selected to participate in the project," he said.

He said the selected prisoners had undergone a transparent interview taking into account the remaining period of their sentence, discipline and citizenship.

"This is because we'll be taking the orchestra to perform outside the prison," he said, hoping that the prison orchestra would be as good as those outside.

"Engaging in music is also a process of rehabilitation and social reintegration of prisoners, prior to release," he said. — BERNAMA
