Pitas villages hit by floods

Kota Kinabalu: Floods caused by incessant heavy rain since Wednesday evening affected six villages and forced the closure of six schools in Pitas.A Civil Defence Force spokesman said 168 people from 46 families were evacuated to two relief centres on Wednesday after their houses were flooded.

He said 158 people from 45 families were at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rokum hall and one family of 10 people at a relief centre in Kampung Sinukab Kinabongan, as of 4pm, Thursday.

"The villages affected by the floods are Kampung Rukom Ulu, Kampung Salimpodon Darat, Kampung Sibaung, Kampung Kebatasan Laut, Kampung Sulakolung Kanibongan, Kampung Kutoyon Kanibongan, Kampung Masin Besar Kanibongan, Kampung Kanibongan and Kampung Mandamai," he said.

The six schools were SK Kanibongan, SK Dalas, SK Kusikad, SK Sosop, SK Pandan Mendamai and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kanibongan.

The water levels at Sungai Bengkoka and Sungai Kebatasan were at a worrying level of 3.7 metres and 5.80 metres, respectively, as of 3pm. - Locksley Ng
