Kota Kinabalu: A 47-year-old local claimed trial to committing sexual abuse against his three-year-old granddaughter.The man made the plea before Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz after the charge was read to him on Tuesday.He allegedly made the toddler touch his private part at 6.30pm on Sept 19 this year at a house in Kg Sembulan Tengah, here.

The man faced punishment under two Sections of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which was passed by the Parliament on July 10, this year, to protect children.The first punishment under Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.
While the additional punishment under Section 16 of the same Act carries a jail term of up to five years and whipping of not less than two strokes, on conviction.The court set Jan 29 for case management and April 24-26 next year for trial.

He was released on a bail of RM10,000 in two local sureties and warned not to tamper with prosecution witnesses as well as his passport, if any, to be impounded by the court until disposal of his case.
