Cargo boat almost sinks in K'batangan
Sandakan: A kumpit (cargo boat) on its way to Jolo, in the Philippines from here almost sank after it sprang a leak and got stranded in Kinabatangan waters, early Tuesday. The MV Lady Joanna II , carrying 16,000 sacks of rice and 1,000 sacks of sugar left Sandakan at about 6am when those onboard realised their boat was filling with water due to leakage in the engine room.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) received a call from the Eastern Sabah Security Command at about 7.20am to provide emergency assistance.

Banggi 43 was deployed to the scene but could not reach the side of the boat because of the turbulent sea condition and strong winds.

The maritime team subsequently ordered the victims to get the safety rafts on their boat before throwing a rope to pull the raft towards them (rescue team).

All 11 crew, comprising Filipinos, aged between 20 and 61, were rescued and taken to the nearby jetty to wait for KM Tebrau which then took them to the maritime jetty, here.

KM Tebrau Commanding Officer Left. Commander Mahathir Ismail said all the victims were transferred to KM Tebrau at about 2.30pm, adding that none were injured.

"The kumpit was left at the scene about 2.8 nautical miles from Kinabatangan estuary," he said, adding that all the rescued victims will be handed over to the kumpit company's agent.

He said MMEA is also ready to provide emergency assistance to local communities who need assistance in case of an accident at sea by contacting their 24-hour Operations Room at 089-229504 or MERS 999.–Mardinah Jikur
