Kota Kinabalu: United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) has identified winnable candidates for the 14th General Election. The Barisan Nasional (BN) component party has also put in place its machinery, especially in seats where it contested in 2013.

Party supremo Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said the final decision on Upko candidacy remains on the shoulders of only two people, its party president and the BN chairman.

But Tangau, who is MP for Tuaran, stated it was "not much of a problem" since Upko only has six state and four parliament seats.

He said the essence of potential candidates were whether they are winnable or otherwise.

"Thus, for now there are more than one name for each seat. Continue to work hard and strengthen our collaboration with our component parties in BN."

In his pep talk to about 1,000 delegates at the end of the Upko 14th General Election retreat for polling district (PDM) leaders and staff at Condotel, near here, Sunday, he urged them to fully understand the issues being manipulated by the oppositions to garner support from voters. Among the issues were GST, oil price hike, cost of living and low prices of commodities such as rubber.

"You have the facts and figures, so take on the oppositions' allegations and especially, in the social media.

Fight them," said Tangau who is also Science, Technology and Innovation, Minister. He hoped all the party's polling officers would returned to their respective division with bigger confidence and morale boosted to face the election.

"What is important is that all of you must be confident and that you are sincerely fighting for the people and the state on the right platform. The BN is going to win, that is our mentality," he said.

Meanwhile, Upko is wary of new challenges as the party geared up for the impending 14th General Election.

Secretary General Datuk Donald Mojuntin urged party members to prepare themselves to face the new challenges - unverified news or fake news, which often spreads like wildfire "and especially through the social media."

"In order to fight this, we must be well equipped not just with the hardware but also knowledge and the correct information.

"We need this so we can debunk whatever lies the opposition is telling," he said.

Due to the emergence of the new challenges, close cooperation among all the Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties is now even more crucial, he said.

Mojuntin also spoke about the many "U-turns which opposition leaders seem to be very fond of."

"They were dead against the GST, then recently they included GST in their alternative Budget 2018 but zero-rated. We all know one of the government revenues is through taxes. How would such happens if there is no collection from GST?" he asked.
