Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Lai Wen Li and Doyce Lee both finished runner-ups in the Redtone 11th KL Junior Open which ended on Sunday in Bukit Jalil.Lai, who has just turned 17, and seeded second in the girls Under-19 category lost to top seed Aifa Azman 3-11, 7-11, 11-13 in the final while Doyce, seeded third lost the final in the girls Under-11 to top seed Sashmini Chandran 5-11, 3-11, 6-11.Earlier in semi-finals, Lai defeated Singaporean third seed Wai Yhann Au Yeong in four sets 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 11-6 and Doyce pulled off an upset with a five-set 2-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 15-13 victory over second seed Whitney Isabelle Wilson.ADVERTISEMENT Another Sabahan, 5/8 seed Danny Gan, who had earlier lost to top seed Lee Hong Wong in the boys Under-11 semi-final, also did well to finish in third place after winning the play-off against ¾ seed Aiden Goh 11-4,11-3,11-6.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Last year's British Junior Under-15 runner-up Duncan Lee played in the higher age group in the boys Under-19 category and finished in seventh place while fellow Sabahan Euodia Lai claimed eighth place in the girls Under-11 category.A record 776 participants took part in the six-day competition and Sabah were represented by 34 players led by coaches Munir Khan and Bryan Faurillo. – GL Oh
