Kota Kinabalu: Glue-sniffing especially among children is at a worrying level, said State Community Development and Consumers Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid. She said based on reports from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) recently, many active glue-sniffers were found to be from the 8-15 age group.

"Most of the glue sniffers are foreign children. However, we (Ministry) take this matter seriously as it could not only affect the development of the children but also lead them to drugs," she said during the State-level Drug Enforcement Action Council meeting at Wisma Tun Fuad Stephen, here, Monday.

She said the Ministry would take the initiative to highlight the issue by providing relevant information and paperwork to introduce a law against glue-sniffing.

"Currently there is no such law," she added.

Jainab also said the Ministry, in collaboration with AADK and other agencies, would continue to work together and come up with initiatives to contain and eradicate the drug menace in the State.

According to her, five papers were discussed to ensure involvement of all relevant agencies in the war on drugs campaign.

Among the discussions were Glue Abuse in Sabah Scenario, Source and Efforts to Overcome by Bukit Padang Hospital Mesra, Increase Public Awareness on Drug Abuse in Sabah by Universiti Malaysia Sabah, War on Drugs Campaign Success Inspiration along with Programmes and Religious Classes Importance to Clients in Recovery Process by AADK, as well as Filtering and Addiction Intervention Service Health Clinic by Manggatal Health Clinic.

Also present at the meeting were AADK Malaysia Deputy Director-General (Operation) Datuk Izhar Abu Talib, AADK Malaysia Prevention Director Abdul Rahman Hamid and State AADK Director Bakri Bibi, among others. - Jeremy S Zabala
