UiTM Education Fund collects RM14mil

Kota Kinabalu: The 1Billion Education Fund or Tabung Pendidikan 1Billion (TP1B), organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Alumni Association Malaysia, has collected RM14 million in cash and kind since its initiation two years ago. Launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in April 11, 2015, TPIB aims to provide assistance to those, particularly current and former UiTM students, who deserve in pursuing educational excellence. To further promote TP1B to the public as well as raising funds, TP1B under the leadership of its Board of Trustees Chairman Tan Sri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin organised a 10-series cycling event called "Budi Ride" across the country, with UiTM Kota Kinabalu picked as the flag-off point.

"This is the second project organised by TP1B, the first a dinner reception in 2015 in Kuala Lumpur which raised close to RM10 million," said Lodin during a media conference after the flag-off officiated by State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, on behalf of Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman, here, Saturday. He said they picked Sabah because of its high achievement in terms of tourism, with many facilities which enabled them to conduct the programme easily. "So far, we have spent RM1 million for various programmes, to assist alumnus in need and provide scholarships. We have also donated RM200,000 to UiTM Shah Alam to organise programmes.

"Right now we have 50 students in Kota Kinabalu for our Eksplorasi Program, the second being held," he added. In addition to the Budi Ride programme, the UiTM Alumni Association Malaysia will also be visiting former and current UiTM students and their families in Sabah, among them a family in Ranau who were made homeless when their house was razed recently.

He said they are also working with Epsom College in Malaysia which has so far offered a place to a son of a rubber tapper and a daughter of a retired soldier in the peninsula. The two students are sponsored by AirAsia Group to study in Epsom College with full funding covering tuition fees and boarding expenses from entry until completion of secondary education (Year 7 up to A-Levels). The sponsorship is made through TP1B with assistance of the Alumni Association Malaysia.Meanwhile, Masidi said the event will not only somehow boost the tourism industry in Sabah but, more importantly, show that we are one when it comes to helping our Bumiputera. "We may come from different backgrounds across the country but when it comes to helping our Bumiputera, we are one, regardless of where we are from…this is the significance I see in this event," he said. He further said UiTM has produced many successful graduates and the time has come for those who have succeeded to assist others to succeed.
