Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysia Autoshow 2017 has recorded more than RM700 million in sales and potential sales, exceeding its initial sales target this year, said Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) Chief Executive Officer, Madani Sahari. The initial target for this year was RM250 million, and from MAI's early calculation, the exhibition managed to secure more than RM700 million in sales and potential sales.

"The main driver is the autoshow itself, acting as a hub for visitors to test drive the cars, get necessary consultation from the sales advisers, and get the financial assistance from financial institutions present at the exhibition," he said during the Malaysia Autoshow 2017 contest prize-giving ceremony here Monday.

The Malaysia Autoshow 2017 attracted 255,000 visitors during its four-day run earlier this month compared with 85,000 visitors last year.

"In 2018, we are targeting the number of visitors to reach 500,000 people," said Madani.

The exhibition was held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park, Serdang (MAEPS) from Nov 9-12.

MAI had decided to use the MAEPS as the venue for the auto show in the future, he added.

"We have seen how MAEPS manages the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism (MAHA) festival, and we are convinced that its facilities could help us to achieve our target in the years to come," he said.

MAI has targeted to achieve three million visitors for its auto show in five years' time.

"We have set this target (three million visitors), and we are working towards it by inviting more manufacturers to showcase their models as well as their concept cars in future auto shows."

Meanwhile, MAI has announced that next year's edition would be held from April 12-15, at MAEPS.

"We hope by moving the exhibition dates from November to April will allow for a better autoshow experience, since the schedule is in consideration of other motor shows around the globe," said Madani.

Most global autoshows such as Frankfurt Autoshow and Tokyo Autoshow are held towards the end of the year, mainly in October and November.

"The Bangkok autoshow is usually held between March and April, and we hope the momentum from the Bangkok autoshow would spillover to Malaysia as well," he added. – Bernama
