Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman said journalists have a constructive role to play as an intermediary between the government and the people. "The media can influence people's way of thinking, move them into action and even change the social and political landscape of a nation. "The public rely on you for true and accurate reporting, and therefore your reports should be based on solid facts and not speculations as this would paint the wrong picture and cause unnecessary concern, or even panic.ADVERTISEMENT "At a time when information is becoming increasingly available at fast speed, you now have an even higher responsibility to ensure your reports are accurate. "The media should not allow any leeway for stories based on mere allegations and half-truths. The pen that you hold is mightier than the sword and you are responsible for how you use it. I am happy to note that the media in Sabah is responsible and brings significant and important news," he said, at the 25th Kinabalu Shell Press Awards.ADVERTISEMENT Musa said the foresight of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak through the Government through Federal-led initiatives such as the ETP and the State-led Halatuju, have brought about growth in various sectors of the state's economy."The focus on oil and gas, and palm oil is showing positive results and creating spin-offs.

In ensuring our economic base remains diversified, we continue to focus on agriculture, tourism and manufacturing in line with the State's Halatuju. "All this translates into improved livelihoods and opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship, which are much needed in a highly competitive world. Shell, a key partner to this annual awards, is also contributing to Malaysia's economic progress through your deepwater operations, namely Gumusut-Kakap and Malikai fields. This will definitely boost the State's economy and encourage the growth of human resources and the related local talents. He said this was also where the media played a vital role. "Your reports on how development efforts are taking shape and the changes these bring to the state and people are key factors towards stirring investors' confidence and most importantly ensure the public their best interests are being met. I thank you for being our partners in progress." Musa also commended Shell Malaysia for its support and leading role as a partner in this tripartite programme, which acknowledges and rewards top performance and excellence in journalism.
