Foreigner who taught using fake MyKad
Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old Indonesian woman who worked as a primary school teacher for 12 years was sentenced to 24 months' jail for having a fake MyKad. Asni Ismail pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie on Friday to having a fake MyKad bearing the serial number 780331-12-5186 at SK Kinasaraban in Ranau on Nov. 6.

She had committed the offence under Section 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations which carries a jail term of up to three years or fine on conviction.

Prosecuting officer Mohd Faizal Tahir of the National Registration Department urged for a deterrent sentence to be imposed on Asni as it was a serious offence which amounted to robbing the rights of locals from the benefit of being the citizen of the country and obtaining employment.

Counsel Amirul Amin representing Asni, requested for a lenient sentence or fine be imposed on his client on the grounds that she has four children with the youngest 10 months old.

Amirul said Asni is supporting her Dusun husband who is having a health problem.

When asked by the court on where she obtained the MyKad, Asni replied that her father arranged the document for her long ago.

Stephanie held that a fine could not be suitable for such a case as it was a serious offence.

She ordered Asni to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving sentence.

In another case, a self-employed local who stole a SESB underground cable here last week was jailed 12 months.

Crndo Jimmie, 41, admitted to committing the offence at the River View, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman at 5.30am on Nov. 4.

Another accused, Mohd Arman Abd Majid, 37, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court set Dec. 4 for mention and released Mohd Arman, a self-employed on a bail of RM3,000 in two sureties.

Earlier, Inspector Suzie Kupit, prosecuting told the court that the SESB auxiliary police detained two men, one of them identified as Crndo for stealing eight feet length of the cable.

Crndo was then handed to police.

He was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both on conviction. - Jo Ann Mool
